Paul Simon Handpicks His Favorite Songs For Songwriter

Videos by American Songwriter

Ever wonder which songs Paul Simon considers his best? A new collection dubbed Songwriter lays the mystery to rest.

The Simon-curated double-disc set, out October 24 via Legacy Recordings, contains a live version of “Sound Of Silence” from his performance earlier this year at Webster Hall in New York City. There’s also a nod to Aretha Franklin, whose less famous cover of “Bridge Over Troubled Water” is included here. Disc two focuses on Paul Simon’s post-Graceland material. We’ve got a soft spot for “Darling Lorraine.”

Songwriter‘s liner notes were penned by veteran music journalist Tom Moon, who writes:

“Inevitably, with an artist who has contributed as much as Simon has, some of the ‘smaller’ pieces get overlooked…. What you learn, listening to this ‘director’s cut’ sampler from a long career, is that there have always been conversations bubbling inside of Simon’s tunes, and those conversations take many forms….”
