3 Could-Have-Been Superstar Country Singers Who Walked Away at the Peak of Their Fame

Most musicians would do anything to get a taste of fame. When it comes to the following talented country singers, however, they inevitably walked away before they became megastars. And each of them has a pretty interesting reason for leaving it all behind. Let’s take a look!

The Wreckers

We’ll consider this entry a twofer, as The Wreckers were composed of talented singers Michelle Branch and Jessica Harp. The pair released their country album Stand Still, Look Pretty in 2006 to pretty significant acclaim. The album hit No. 4 on the country charts and was a crossover success on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 14. Then, they disappeared and officially broke up in 2007.

So, what happened? It’s a tale as old as time. Both Branch and Harp wanted to focus on their solo careers. Both singers did indeed go on to enjoy fairly successful solo careers through the 2000s and 2010s. Harp, specifically, has retired from recording to focus on her songwriting career.

Chris Cagle

If you were a country music fan in the early aughts, you likely listened to a lot of Chris Cagle’s music. His debut album, Play It Loud, dropped in 2000 and was an immediate hit at No. 19 on the US country charts. All of his albums were crossover hits, too, with four out of five of his studio albums making it to the Top 40 of the Billboard 200. And then, in 2015, he announced his retirement, just a few years after his last album Back In The Saddle made it to No. 27 on the Billboard 200.

Cagle’s reasoning? He wanted to quit while he could still “go home with [his] dignity” and prefered to focus on being a father. As of 2019, Cagle has returned to performing but has not released an album since 2012.

Faith Hill

If anyone could be described as the “it girl” of early 2000s country music, it would be Faith Hill. She was huge during that era, and many of her albums, including her last release with husband Tim McGraw, The Rest Of Our Life from 2017, reached the top of the US country charts. Three of her solo studio albums peaked at No. 1 on both the country charts and the Billboard 200. And she makes it to this list of country singers because she basically walked away from the industry with a record at the top of the charts in 2017. She still performs occasionally but has more or less left her recording career behind.
