3 of the Most Important Dates in Rock Music History

Monumental days in history, there are loads of them. Though, that doesn’t make them any less important or significant, as the events of those days created a ripple effect that altered the timeline we all live in today. Well, on a less intense note, these same types of dates occurred in music history; they just might not have altered the socio-political world we live in today. Nonetheless, they are monumental in the field of music, and here are arguably three of the most important.

July 6, 1957: The Day Paul McCartney Met John Lennon

On July 6, 1957, at a church festival in Woolton, Liverpool, John Lennon‘s band The Quarrymen played. Though that performance is not what changed the course of musical history. Rather, that would be when a friend of Lennon’s introduced him to Paul McCartney. After that interaction, McCartney joined the band, and the foundation of The Beatles was born.

There is no telling how different popular music would be if Paul McCartney and John Lennon hadn’t met on that day. Though, given their insurmountable success and impact, it’s fair to assume that it would be gravely different. Needless to say, this day altered the timeline of music history in the greatest of proportions.

September 24, 1991: The Music Release Date of All Music Release Dates

The 90s marked a major page turn in the trajectory of modern music, and it arguably all transpired on September 24, 1991. On September 24, 1991, Nirvana released Nevermind, The Red Hot Chili Peppers released Blood Sugar Sex Magik, A Tribe Called Quest released The Low End Theory, and The Pixies released Trompe Le Monde.

All four of these albums laid the framework for the mass popularization of rap, grunge rock, and alternative rock. Furthermore, all four of these albums graced the Billboard 200, with the highest being The Chili Peppers’, as it peaked at No. 3.

August 1, 1981: The Launch of ‘MTV’

There is no greater contrast in musical styles than between the 70s and 80s, and one event that defined the contrast was the launch of MTV on August 1, 1981. MTV changed the scope of music in nearly every way. It changed the way music was consumed, influenced the styles and trends of the decade, and generally made musicians into more than just musicians, as there was a greater focus placed on showmanship following the launch of the program.

MTV put the limelight on artists such as Madonna, Michael Jackson, Duran Duran, Prince, Cyndi Lauper, Bon Jovi, Guns N’ Roses, and arguably any pop musician who found major success in the 1980s. To this day, there has been no TV music program as popular or successful as MTV.
