For being known as the “Mother Church of Country Music” the Ryman Auditorium has had quite a few memorable moments not pertaining to country music. Matter of fact, some of the venue’s most acknowledged concerts have included acts such as Lizzo, the Wu-Tang Clan, and Louis Armstrong.

It seems the Ryan Auditorium is not just a church for country music, but a church for all music. That said, here are three of the most memorable non-country performances to happen during the Ryman’s illustrious 132-year-old history.
1. Ed Sheeran’s Intimate Performance
Following a highly produced performance at Nissan Stadium, Sheeran performed at the intimate venue with just himself and his guitar. This decision was highly appropriate as both the singer and the venue are known for their minimalistic approach to music. It was Sheeran’s bare-bones performance that caused it to be one of the greatest performances ever held at the Ryman.
Once Sheeran closed out the show, the crowd erupted and Sheeran yelled out and said it was “one of his favorite moments of the last five years.” Despite not being a country musician, Sheeran’s performance fit seamlessly into the Ryman’s personality.
2. Harry Styles’ Ryman Debut
In 2017 Styles made his Ryman debut in the middle of his first-ever solo tour. It might go without saying, but surely country music fans and purists never imagined Styles to share the space with some of country music’s best. However, he did, and he did a phenomenal job.
Performing songs from One Direction and covers of “The Chain” and “Girl Crush,” Styles stayed true to himself and the Ryman by playing music from both genres. Even though Styles has never released any country music, his motivation for the show was solely due to his desire to perform at Ryman. Stating to the crowd, “When we booked this tour, this was kind of the reason: this room,” per Ryman.
3. Kesha Returns to Her Hometown
Given that none of her music resembles that of country, it always comes as a surprise to learn that Kesha hails from Nashville. Regardless, she returned to her hometown amidst her comeback tour and put on a heartwarming show encompassing the growth of her career and herself. Seemingly this show meant the world to her, as she screamed to the crowd saying, “I’ve always wanted to play this venue, since I was a little girl” and “I just want y’all to know how special this is for me,” according to the Tennessean.
It was due to this personal significance that the artist impressed herself, as well as her fans in attendance. To have this moment transpire amidst her ongoing legal battles and musical comeback reportedly made it all the more cathartic. The concert was a true milestone in Kesha’s climb back to the top.
