3 Songs That Prove That David Gilmour Is One of the World’s Greatest Guitarists

Pink Floyd is a legendary band, and part of what made the progressive rock outfit so legendary was the perfect mix of musicians that made up the band. While most fans of Pink Floyd wish that Syd Barrett could have had more time with the outfit, the subsequent addition of David Gilmour was incredibly smart. Not only is Gilmour an accomplished singer and songwriter, but his guitar chops are nothing to sneeze at. Let’s look at just a few times David Gilmour proved that he is one of prog rock’s greatest guitarists!

“Money”

This one’s an obvious shoo-in for this list, considering “Money” is a serious fan favorite. This track is one of the greatest works in prog-rock to date, and part of what makes it so good is David Gilmour’s killer guitar track.

While most of Gilmour’s guitar licks on the whole of The Dark Side Of The Moon are incredible, there’s something about “Money” that just hits. This guitar track is a little bit funky, and that solo is on another level.

“Breathe”

David Gilmour has said himself that “Breathe” is one of his favorite songs from Pink Floyd’s extensive discography, and I can certainly see why. It’s such a unique song, and a great example of the band’s ability to transform sound with elements of psychedelia and almost mathematical precision.

Gilmour’s guitar track tells a story without words on this song. And even though “Breathe” lacks the technical precision of some of the band’s other songs, it’s still a delight to hear.

“Comfortably Numb”

This one’s a classic from The Wall, and David Gilmour was at his absolute best on “Comfortably Numb”. This 1980 hit features one of the most legendary and well-loved guitar tracks straight from Gilmour, and it’s still hard for even the most talented guitarists to replicate.

Playing the guitar with technical precision is a talent in itself, but injecting pure emotion into it is an entirely different thing with its own difficulties. David Gilmour manages to be both technical and emotional on this guitar track. That alone proves he really is a guitar genius, even today.
