James Brown is an easy musician to love, and his effect on funk music in the 20th century is still felt today. Plenty of younger listeners today continue to discover his music years after he passed in 2006. We think the following four James Brown songs are essential listening for those who are new to his work. Let’s dive in!
1. “It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World”
A surprising and controversial ode to women, “It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World” from 1966 showcases Brown’s softer side. A major hit and an iconic ballad in his discography, this song doesn’t boast the extravagant, sweaty, exploding-on-stage persona of James Brown. Rather, it’s a passionate piece of work.

2. “Get Up Offa That Thing”
This entry on our list of essential James Brown songs is capable of propelling listeners out of their seats. That’s part of what made James Brown such an icon; his energy was infectious.
“Get Up Offa That Thing” was released in 1976 and came at a good time for the singer. He lacked a solid hit for the better part of two years, and even his fans felt his misery over his career taking a left turn.
“I looked out at all those people sitting there, and because I was depressed, they looked depressed,” said Brown in his autobiography. “I yelled, ‘Get up offa that thing and dance till you feel better!’ I probably meant until I felt better.”
3. “Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag (Part 1)”
“Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag (Part 1)” was released in 1965 and served as Brown’s first Top 10 hit. It’s a notable departure from his earlier sound as he started to move toward the sound we all know and love him for today. It’s a funky, rhythmic delight that definitely deserved to be a Grammy-winning hit.
4. “I Got You (I Feel Good)”
This would not be a list of essential James Brown songs without mentioning his most well-known song from 1965, “I Got You (I Feel Good)”. The whole of Out Of Sight is essential listening, but you just can’t beat this funky delight. The album would not have been as good without it.
