5 Songs That Perfectly Capture the Angst of the 1990s

The 1990s was the era of angst and hardcore rock songs. Few eras of music have the angry, grungey power of the 90s, and plenty of fans revisit that time when musicians weren’t afraid to get confrontational in their music. I’m a big fan of the following angst-filled songs from the 1990s, and maybe you are, too! Let’s take a look.

1. “Rebel Girl” by Bikini Kill

Riot grrrl might just be resurging soon, but nobody was doing it quite like Bikini Kill in the 1990s.
“Rebel Girl” is by far the punk rock outfit’s most well-known song, and it’s a feminist album still loved today.

Fun Fact: “Rebel Girl” was actually produced by none other than Joan Jett, and the album version features Jett on the guitar and background vocals.

2. “Lithium” by Nirvana

1990s songs full of angst and anger were often found in the discographies of grunge bands. Nirvana is probably the most well-known grunge band to come out of the 90s, and Kurt Cobain’s screeching vocals delivered more than a few angsty lyrics. “Lithium” is a big fan favorite about a man who turns to religion to keep himself from the edge of death after the passing of his girlfriend.

3. “Miss World” by Hole

Live Through This is one of the most memorable albums to come out of the grunge era. “Miss World” is just one of many angsty songs on that album, and it’s the kind of song you’ll want to listen to if you’re dealing with poor self-image.

4. “Killing In The Name” by Rage Against The Machine

Rage Against The Machine were masters of angst and alternative metal, and few songs best exemplify what they were all about in the 1990s than “Killing In The Name”. A certified protest song of its era, this track protests police brutality in the United States. According to the band, “Killing In The Name” was inspired by the beating of Rodney King and the Los Angeles riots in 1992.

5. “Creep” by Radiohead

Plenty of songs from the 1990s were full of rage and angst. “Creep” by Radiohead is one example of a song that fits that description, yet it isn’t necessarily as aggressive as one might expect. “Creep” is a quietly angsty song about unrequited attraction and never fitting into the stereotypical masculine, assertive role.
