Sierra Hull has deep roots in bluegrass. The masterful mandolin player was jamming at bluegrass festivals before she was old enough to drive. In recent years, she’s broken out of genre confines and applied her talents with a wide array of artists across several genres. As a result, she finds herself performing a musical juggling act, balancing tradition and exploration. She put that delicate balance on full display with her forthcoming album A Tip-Toe High Wire. Listen to the album’s lead single “Boom” below.

A Tip-Toe High Wire marks some major firsts for Hull. It’s her first album in five years. Additionally, it is her first independently released album. It’s also the first time she has recorded with her road band. That band features Shaun Richardson (guitar), Avery Merritt (fiddle), Erik Coveney (bass), and Mark Raudabaugh (drums).

“In some ways, it feels like stepping out into a different territory,” Hull said of releasing an independent album. “And leaning into that at this chapter of my career—the freedom of being able to be out on my own, to create with no walls for what feels like the first time—has helped me grow,” she added.
“Boom” co-written by Hull and Adam Wright is an example of her growth as a songwriter, musician, and vocalist. It also showcases the musical chemistry that makes her touring band a musical force to be reckoned with. The funky syncopated rhythm and the fine-tuned instrumental breaks in the song make it an early standout. Near the track’s midpoint, a two-guitar attack spirals into psychedelic territory before a smoking mandolin solo from Hull brings things back around.
