3 of the Best Covers of Joni Mitchell’s “A Case of You”
1. Brandi Carlile
We’re starting off this list with the obvious choice: Brandi Carlile. Carlile has forged a friendship with Mitchell that has allowed her to perform this classic a number of times. She’s even made “A Case of You” a duet with the folk legend herself. Nevertheless, we chose her rendition of it from The Stern Show. Carlile makes quick work of the vocal flips and stunning runs. Not many people could do this song justice. Carlile is certainly one artist who can–and she’s doubled down on that ability.
Just before our love got lost you said
“I am as constant as a northern star”
And I said, “Constantly in the darkness
Where’s that at?
If you want me I’ll be in the bar”
2. James Blake
James Blake’s version of “A Case of You,” is far removed from the original. He adds his own flares to it that align well with the rest of his catalog. It’s haunting and rife with emotion. What more could we ask of a Mitchell cover? If you’re looking for something a little different, check out Blake’s cover of this hit, below.

In the blue TV screen light
I drew a map of Canada
Oh, Canada
With your face sketched on it twice
3. Prince
There wasn’t a song that Prince couldn’t tackle. His impressive vocal chops gave him free reign in the studio. He once used that freedom to cover “A Case of You.” Like most Prince offerings, he leans into the dramatics of this song. From drawn out notes to piercing, high ad-libs, this cover is truly a masterclass in song interpretation.
Oh, you’re in my blood like holy wine
You taste so bitter and so sweet
Oh, I could drink a case of you, darling
And I would still be on my feet
Oh, I would still be on my feet
