Waylon Jennings was one of the originators of the Outlaw Country movement in the ‘70s. However, his fame didn’t end when the movement faded from popularity in the ‘80s. After all, Jennings had spent decades building his fanbase before the Outlaw movement took hold and remains one of the most influential artists of the modern age.

In 1983, Jennings could still pull a massive crowd. He also received billing on some of the biggest festivals of the day. For instance, he was part of the 1983 US Festival in San Bernardino, California. Watch him perform the timeless “Mamas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys” at the festival below.
Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak developed the US Festival. In his mind, the ‘70s belonged to the “Me” generation and he wanted to push back against that kind of thinking. As a result, he came up with the US Festival in hopes of bringing people together to be more community-minded. The first US Festival took place over Labor Day Weekend in 1982. Less than a year later, they staged the second festival over Memorial Day weekend in 1983.
The second US Festival ran for three consecutive days from May 28 to May 30. Each day brought acts form a different genre to the stage. First was New Wave Day, then came Heavy Metal Day, and the three-day run ended with Rock day. Then, on Saturday, June 4, came Country Day. Jennings shared the stage with Willie Nelson, Ricky Skaggs, Hank Williams Jr., Emmylou Harris & The Hot Band, and more.

Ed Bruce and his wife Patsy Bruce co-wrote the song and Bruce recoded it for his 1976 self-titled album. He saw some chart success with the song with his version landing at No. 15 on the country charts. Then, two years later, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson recorded it for their duet album Waylon & Willie.
Jennings and Nelson’s version of the song went to No. 1 on the country chart. It also brought them the Grammy Award for Best Country Performance by a Duo with Vocal.
“Mamas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys” is one of Nelson and Jennings’ most loved duets. However, Jennings chose to perform the song solo during the US Festival despite Nelson be on the bill as well.
