Slash Once Dished on His Mother’s Fling With David Bowie: “I Was Pretty Apprehensive”

Rock and roll has produced some of the craziest stories imaginable. Some are dark, some are humorous, and some are just downright weird. So weird that even the most imaginative minds probably couldn’t think of them. One of the weirdest stories out there didn’t involve infamous party boys Ozzy Osbourne, Steven Tyler, or Elvis Presley. Rather, it involved David Bowie, Slash, and Slash’s mother.

Slash was seemingly born to be a rock and roll guitarist. His upbringing was wild, as the musical lifestyle surrounded him from a very young age. That being said, one product of that upbringing was the fact that David Bowie actually had an affair with his mother, Ola J. Hudson, who was a renowned fashion designer and costumer.

As one might expect, Slash has more stories than he could possibly tell in one interview. Hence, when he sat down with Howard Stern on The Howard Stern Show, there were only so many stories he had time to share. One of those stories was regarding his mother’s relationship with Ziggy Stardust, David Bowie.

“She [Ola J. Hudson] designed all his [David Bowie] clothes, so they had a working relationship first and foremost and then they had a romantic relationship which really didn’t last that long,” Slash started his anecdote. “It was probably like maybe a year and a half.”

To be clear, Slash did state that his mother and his father were separated at the time, so no adultery transpired.

Regardless, Slash continued his story and told Stern that David Bowie was his mother’s first relationship after she and Slash’s father broke up.

“He was the first guy that came in after my dad, so I was pretty apprehensive about hanging out with him,” Slash said.

Slash didn’t dive into the matter too much; after all, who wants to talk about their mother’s love life? Nobody wants to talk about their mother’s love life.

Nevertheless, Slash grew up wildly different than most kids, and while it did bring some hardship, it also created the guitarist we all know and admire to this day. Many details about Hudson and Bowie are still in the dark. Though, just the surface-level context we have received still makes for one epic story. Both Slash and his mother went on to have very successful careers after Bowie’s departure, but they surely never forgot his time in their lives.
