Fyre Fest 2 Showrunners Accuse the Mexican Government of “Theft”

To absolutely no surprise whatsoever, Fyre Fest 2 was postponed just a few days ago. Now, it looks like the organizers behind the once disgraced and now postponed music festival have formally accused the Mexican government of theft.

Last month, local government officials of Isla Mujeres claimed that the upcoming festival “did not exist” according to their tourism board. According to a recent statement from Fyre Fest 2’s spokesman Nick Lowe, plans were in motion to host the festival on the Mexican island, and the municipality’s officials allegedly stole money given to them for permits and accommodations for the upcoming fest.

“The Playa del Carmen government introduced us to venues, hotels, and hospitality partners, all of which we signed and paid,” said Lowe in a statement released to existing ticketholders. “The Playa del Carmen government issued permits from the Secretary General, Tourism, and Environment—all paid for. The Playa del Carmen government held a joint press conference alongside our venue. The Playa del Carmen government made public announcements on their official government Instagram and X accounts, expressing their excitement for FYRE Festival 2 to take place in Playa del Carmen.”

Lowe went on to say that several days later, the government publicly denied that they were even aware of Fyre Festival 2.

“You can’t make this stuff up,” Lowe said. “When a government takes your money, issues permits, promotes the event, and then pretends it’s never heard of you, that’s not just dishonest—it’s theft. Due to this, we have decided to move FYRE Festival 2 elsewhere.”

What Does This Mean for Fyre Fest 2?

If your sense of pattern recognition is kicking in, there’s a reason for that. This particular scenario is not unlike what took place during the OG Fyre Fest years back, which resulted in plenty of lawsuits relating to fraud on the part of the festival’s organizers. Could this yet again be another situation in which Billy McFarland convinced a number of festivalgoers to buy tickets to a “fake” event?

We won’t take sides on the matter at this point. But one can’t help but wonder what might be going through the heads of people who actually bought tickets to the second iteration of Fyre Fest. Regardless, McFarland has been very direct about his belief that Fyre Fest 2 will happen, albeit on a different date and at a different location.
