Every year, the Met Gala brings some of the biggest names in the world together for a gloriously dressed night of fundraising. For the last decade, Jason Derulo has been celebrating the event by falling down the Met Gala stairs. At least, that’s the running joke that started in 2015.

Chances are, if you’re scrolling social media today (May 5), you’re going to see some Cinco de Mayo posts, some Star Wars jokes (Revenge of the Fifth and May the Fourth), and a man in a white tuxedo falling down the red carpeted stairs of the Met Gala while a room full of smartly-dressed people look on. The posts’ captions will inevitably claim that it is Derulo taking his annual tumble. However, that’s not the case.

The Origin of the Jason Derulo Met Gala Meme
To be clear, no, Jason Derulo didn’t fall down the stairs at the Met Gala. He didn’t fall down the stairs at last year’s event, either. In fact, he didn’t take the tumble in 2015 when the meme started. The falsehoods only get deeper from there.
According to Billboard, Derulo wasn’t even in New York on the night of the 2015 Met Gala. Instead, he was quite literally across the country in Los Angeles, rehearsing. So, it must have been someone who looked like Derulo, right? Wrong. Other angles of the photo incident reveal that the person falling down the stairs was actually a white guy with black hair.
At this point, you may be wondering why no one reported on the guy who fell down the stairs at the 2015 Met Gala. A closer look at the photo may also make some eagle-eyed folks wonder why everyone’s outfits are so boring. They are all dressed to the nines, to be sure. However, the Met Gala is all about over-the-top fashion. The guy taking a fall is the only one in the photo not wearing a classic black tuxedo.
Well, that’s because the photo didn’t come from the 2015 Met Gala. Nor was it from another Met Gala, or 2015. This photo was reportedly snapped during the Cannes Film Festival in 2011. According to Newsweek, the unnamed man was trying to crash the film festival. He tried to perform a stunt on the red carpet before a screening of The Beaver and a ceremony honoring actor Jean-Paul Belmondo.
