Eric Church Takes Us Time Traveling With a Feel-Good “Hands of Time” Performance at ACM Awards

Although awards shows like the CMAs and the CMT Awards celebrated the accomplishments of both new and old country singers, the ACM Awards appeared to set a new standard when it came to opening numbers. Producing an opening number that lasted 12 minutes and featured stars like Wynonna Judd, LeAnn Rimes, Reba McEntire, and Clint Black, the show kicked off the ceremony with a powerful performance. And wanting to keep that momentum going, Eric Church eventually made his way to the stage to offer a performance of his hit song “Hands of Time.”

Just a few days ago, Church released his newest album Evangeline vs. the Machine. Marking his first album in nearly four years, the album included songs like “Darkest Hour”, “Storm in Their Blood”, and “Hands of Time.” Excited about his recent release, it made perfect sense that the country singer would pick a song from the new album. And when it came to the performance, Church didn’t disappoint as he offered a simplistic yet powerful set.

Online, fans discussed the performance with comments reading…Oh,Eric Church is crushing this “Hands of Time” performance at the ACM Awards.” One person wondered, “I think “Hands Of Time” gets @ericchurch back to #1 on the chart. It’s that excellent of a greatly written song. BTW, just a question, why is there always a woman singing backing vocals for Eric nowadays? Just curious.”

Eric Church Not A Fan Of Streaming Music

Outside of his time at the ACM Awards, Church spent the last several months promoting Evangeline vs. the Machine. And throughout that time, the country singer opened up about the current state of the music industry and how streaming platforms changed the way fans listened to music.

Speaking with USA Today, Church insisted, “A lot of artists nowadays, you write a song on Tuesday and put it out Friday. There’s this flooding the zone. I’m an album kid and I still know it’s the right way. We’re going through a period that a lot of people aren’t listening to an album front to back. I see this with my kids that music becomes something happening in the background versus something that really affects them emotionally and artistically.”

Although understanding the current shift in music, Church still focused on the old style of producing an entire body of work. Before becoming a top name in country music, the singer was just a fan. “Music is the way I’ve dealt with anything good or bad in my life. I’m a fan first. Music was this siren for me at an early age and has always been the thing I’ve leaned on when I’ve had struggles, devastation, triumphs. You think about the way they committed themselves to their art and I see that lacking today, that care and thoughtfulness.”

While Church celebrated his newest albums, it seemed that the singer not only wanted to shine a light on himself but what he considered the right way to make music.
