Fall Out Boy Guitarist Joe Trohman to Undergo Surgery, Take Rest of the Year Off

Joe Trohman is taking a break from Fall Out Boy. The band and its lead guitarist recently took to Instagram to announce that Trohman will soon undergo hand surgery. The operation will require him to sit out performances for the rest of the year.

“After years of managing ongoing issues with my right hand, it’s become clear that I need surgery to avoid permanent damage,” Trohman’s statement read. “Unfortunately, this means I’ll have to take the rest of the year off from playing with the band. The silver lining is that I’m on track for a full recovery.”

“The band will still be playing all scheduled shows,” his statement continued. “I’m looking forward to recovering so I can get back out there with the guys. Thanks so much for the love and support.”

Trohman’s absence will not slow the group down. While the band has yet to announce who will fill in for Trohman, Fall Out Boy is scheduled to play several shows in 2025.

Next up is Cowboys Music Festival on July 8. From there they’ll play in Minnesota, Japan, and Brazil. Their last scheduled show of the year is currently Oceans Calling Festival on Sept. 28.

Joe Trohman’s Past Fall Out Boy Break

It’s not the first time Trohman has temporarily stepped away from the group. Back in 2023, he took a break after realizing that his mental health had “rapidly deteriorated over the past several years,” which caused burnout.

“To avoid fading away and never returning, I will be taking a break from work which regrettably includes stepping away from Fall Out Boy for a spell,” he said in a statement at the time. “It pains me to make this decision, especially when we are releasing a new album that fills me with great pride (the sin I’m most proud of).”

At the time, he assured fans that he’d “absolutely, one-hundred percent” return to the band. He did just that approximately four months later.

“I’m officially back! I want to thank everyone for the love and support while I took some time away to focus on my brain and get healthy for my family, my friends and myself,” he wrote on Instagram at the time. “… I’m stoked to be back in action and I can’t wait to see everyone on tour this summer!”
