Gracie Abrams Gushes Over Working With Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco on “Call Me When You Break Up”

Gracie Abrams didn’t have to think twice about collaborating with Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco. The pop star recently chatted with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, and revealed why she quickly agreed to team up with the engaged couple on their new song, “Call Me When You Break Up.”

“I’m just the biggest fan of both Selena and Benny and really have been forever,” Abrams said. “For as long as I’ve cared about music, both of their work has been in my life. So anything that they want from me is a yes forever. I just felt really grateful for the opportunity.”

It helped that Abrams loved the track as well.

“The song was immediately so stuck in my head as soon as I heard it for the first time,” Abrams said. “Of course, the opportunity to write my verse on it, it just happened so quickly, which I think is such a testament to how addicting the song is.”

The track, Abrams said, speaks to both Gomez and Blanco.

“It’s so both of them,” she said. “It’s been so beautiful to have a tiny little window into the magic that they are independently and very much together.”

Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco’s “Scared of Loving You”

“Call Me When You Break Up” was the second track fans got to hear off of Gomez and Blanco’s upcoming joint album, I Said I Love You First. “Scared of Loving You” was the first track the pair put out.

“It just felt like it was a little taste of what we are and how we made this together, and how much we loved it and how much we love each other,” Gomez told Lowe of why they opted to release that track first. “It just felt like it was meant to be.”

Blanco agreed, stating, “She’s had such a journey in life, both personally, medically, so many other things. She makes you just believe it. She’s like, ‘I’m not scared of dying young or anyone,’ but she’s scared of the fact of losing someone that she’s finally created a bond with where she feels comfortable enough. Somehow by God’s grace, I happen to be that person. I have no idea why, but I am.”

Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco’s Joint Album

As for the album as a whole, Blanco described his and Gomez’s decision to team up as an “a ha moment.”

“We were both in such a space where we were like, ‘What are we doing? We’ve said everything we wanted to,’” he said. “You look at both me and Selena. We’ve been fortunate enough to have these careers that have lasted so long. “

“This was kind of just an idea that started in our bedroom. It was like, ‘Oh, let’s just make something fun.’ And then it was actually really good. I was like, ‘Holy f**k. We have to do this,’” Blanco added. “… Everything felt right and it almost felt too good.”

Ahead of the album’s March 21st release, Gomez said, “There’s nothing that makes me more proud than to stand by everything I’ve done, and love it deeply, and really just pour my heart into it.”

“That applies to everything in my life,” she said. “I think this whole experience has been cathartic and beautiful, and I got to do it with my best friend, so it was great.”
