“I Don’t Remember a Thing”: Coachella Performer Apologizes for Blacking Out During Set

Coachella has always been an event that elicits quite a bit of excess; it’s one big musical party, after all. However, it looks like famed electronic music producer deadmau5 went a bit too far with his Coachella set last Friday.

Joel Zimmerman, a.k.a. deadmau5, performed at the Quasar stage with fellow artist Zhu for an extended set. Sadly for fans, the set was cut short. According to reports, Zimmerman was taking shots and slurring his speech during the set. When it became clear that his mixes were sounding a bit off and he was falling over behind the DJ booth, the set ended quickly. Zimmerman had to be helped off the stage.

Deadmau5’s Drunken Coachella Set Was Still Pretty Cool, All Things Considered

The next day, Zimmerman took to Instagram to acknowledge the mishap.

“I don’t remember a thing,” said Zimmerman in the post, accompanied by a photo of a water bottle. “But I don’t think I had a cig? So… that’s good I guess? Going back to bed. Wake me up around Thursday ish. […] Probably my last Coachella show.”

Zimmerman didn’t wholly acknowledge the chaos surrounding his set until today. In an Instagram post (beautifully accompanying a photo of his cat), Zimmerman acknowledged that a lot of people are disappointed in him.

“Sorry about last night,” said Zimmerman. “Lol. TO BE FAIR, I felt the first 3/4 was great! Huge shout out to [Zhu] for introducing me to whisky and carrying my dumb a** till the bitter end.”

Zimmerman went on to say that he is going to focus on quitting smoking, doing some “f*ucken personal resetting” at home, and working on new music.

Surprisingly, the comments from fans have been mostly positive and forgiving.

“Crashing out at Coachella is kinda iconic,” said one fan in the comments section of Zimmerman’s post.

“Dude, it truly was a great set (and laugh), but ultimately refreshing to know that you two were actually djing,” said another.

Deadmau5 released the song “Juptier”, along with an accompanying music video, earlier this year. He also released “Endless”, a collaboration with Irisih producer Rebūke and Ed Graves, this year as well. His last studio release was a collaborative effort with Kaskade titled Kx5 in 2023. Hopefully, we’ll hear new music from the famed producer soon.
