During Weezer’s recent Coachella set from last weekend, Rivers Cuomo admitted to the crowd that the band is currently working on a film in Los Angeles. He didn’t give out much in the way of details, other than the film will be a mockumentary and a cross between Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. It is also being touted as a “concert movie that doubles as a mockumentary” that will be set in a “heightened reality.” Obviously, knowing Weezer, this is going to be a very bizarre film. And apparently, famed actor Keanu Reeves has been cast to play the film’s villain.

In a way, it’s not exactly surprising that Keanu Reeves will be involved with the upcoming Weezer flick. The two entities go back quite far. Weezer actually opened for Reeves’ band, Dogstar, back in 1992, and it was the band’s first-ever public gig. Weezer and Dogstar reunited in 2024, this time with Dogstar opening for Weezer during their 30th celebration of The Blue Album.
One could say that Cuomo owes Reeves one. Who knows if they’d be as huge as they are today if they didn’t open for Dogstar?
Anyhoo, that rapport will allegedly be a canon part of the movie. Weezer and Reeves’ 30-year “rivalry” will apparently be an important part of the upcoming film’s plot.
What We Know About the Upcoming Weezer Movie and Keanu Reeves’ Involvement
Rivers Cuomo has been pretty secretive about the upcoming mockumentary thus far. All we really know is that Keanu Reeves will play a villain of sorts, and the film will reportedly feature comedians and actors Johnny Knoxville, Eric Andre, Juliette Lewis, Ben Schwartz, and each of Weezer’s members themselves.
David Leitch (John Wick, Bullet Train, The Fall Guy) will produce the film. Henry Joost (Catfish, Project Power) and Ariel Schulman (Catfish, Paranormal Activity 3) are set to split directing duties. Back in October of 2024, Weezer allegedly asked an audience for assistance in filming a huge fight scene for the movie.
Outside of that, there isn’t much more information out there. Neither the title of the film nor the release date has been released as of yet. Stay tuned!
