If you have been watching season two of Squid Games, you know it is no walk in the park. Thanos’ character disposition is a bit detestable, although, certain elements about his character make folks laugh amidst the bloodshed and grotesque facets of the season. Whether it be dancing in one of the life-threatening games or butchering a colloquial English saying, Thanos is the premier comic relief in season 2 of Squid Games. Though, this isn’t his first rodeo in entertainment, as Thanos has been one of the biggest K-pop stars for years. His real name is Choi Seung-hyun, and he was an integral member of the K-pop group, BIGBANG
From The Stage to The ‘Squid Game’ Screen
Prior to making his Netflix debut, Choi Seung-hyun had quite a life of ups and downs. His group, BIGBANG had a successful run until Seung-hyun went solo in 2010. Subsequently, the South Korean musician had a successful seven-year solo run until it was time for him to do his mandatory military service in 2017. According to the Free Press Journal, when Seung-hyun enlisted, the police arrested and charged him with marijuana consumption. Seung-hyun was sentenced to 10 months in prison, however, was able to avoid jail time thanks to the South Korean justice department’s leniency.
Following his dodged jail time, Seung-hyun served time in the military as a conscripted police officer. The South Korean military then transferred him to another barracks given the controversy and that is when the actor/musician was found unconscious in his respective base. That was the last time the world heard from Choi Seung-hyun, as he went on a nine-year media hiatus. However, he is now back in the limelight once again.
Many South Korean media outlets grew upset with Seung-Hyun’s return. However, the show’s creator, Hwang Dong Hyuk, had nothing but praise for the former K-pop star. He stated, “I feel that it took him a lot of guts to portray a character, especially someone who shares a lot of similarities that are quite negative to him as a person too,” per People.
Choi Seung-hyun’s comeback story is one for the ages. Furthermore, he didn’t waltz back into the business but made a grand entrance with his portrayal as the comedic antagonist in season 2 of Squid Games.
