Remember When Blondie Scored Their First No. 1 Hit in 1979?

In 1979, Blondie scored their first No. 1 hit with โ€œHeart Of Glassโ€. On the bandโ€™s third studio album, Parallel Lines, โ€œHeart Of Glassโ€ was written by band members Debbie Harry and Chris Stein.

โ€œHeart Of Glassโ€ came after Blondie had already released several singles, including some that became moderate hits. Prior to โ€œHeart Of Glassโ€, Blondie had songs that were successful in other countries, including โ€œIn The Fleshโ€,  โ€œDenisโ€, and โ€œHanging On The Telephoneโ€, among others. But itโ€™s โ€œHeart Of Glassโ€ that became Blondieโ€™s first song to hit No. 1 in the United States.

A song about the pain that often accompanies love, โ€œHeart Of Glassโ€ says, โ€œOnce I had a love and it was a gas / Soon turned out had a heart of glass / Seemed like the real thing, only to find / Mucho mistrust, love’s gone behind.โ€

“Heart Of Glass” is Blondie’s first No. 1 single, but it isn’t their only one. In 1980, they reached the top of the charts with “Call Me”, one of their most successful singles. Later that year, Blondie also released “The Tide Is High”, which reached the top of the charts. In 1981, Blondie had their final No.1 single in the United States, with “Rapture”.

The Story Behind โ€œHeart Of Glassโ€ by Blondie

โ€œHeart Of Glassโ€ might be on Blondieโ€™s third studio album, but it dates back to the beginning of Blondie.

โ€œ’Heart Of Glass’ was one of the first songs Blondie wrote,โ€ Harry reveals. “But it was years before we recorded it properly. Weโ€™d tried it as a ballad, as reggae, but it never quite worked. At that point, it had no title. We just called it ‘The Disco Song’.”

Although the angst seems almost palpable in โ€œHeart Of Glassโ€, Harry insists the song isnโ€™t at all autobiographical.

โ€œThe lyrics werenโ€™t about anyone,โ€ Harry maintains. โ€œThey were just a plaintive moan about lost love. At first, the song kept saying, โ€˜Once I had a love, it was a gas. Soon turned out, it was a pain in the ass.โ€™ We couldnโ€™t keep saying that, so we came up with, ‘Soon turned out, had a heart of glass.’โ€

Blondie might have had a hit with “Heart Of Glass”, but it also came with a downside. Part of the popular new wave and punk sound, Harry recalls receiving some criticism in their inner circle because of the song.

โ€œWhen we did โ€˜Heart Of Glass’, it wasnโ€™t cool in our social set to play disco,” Harry admits. “But we did it because we wanted to be uncool. A lot of people weโ€™d hung out and been close friends with on the scene for years said weโ€™d sold out by doing a disco song.โ€
