The Cure’s Robert Smith Hints at Another New Album, Aiming for Summer 2025 Release

Songs Of A Lost World was finally released after years in limbo in 2024, marking the first The Cure release in 16 years. It was a massive success, and the album hit no. 1 in the UK. It also hit no. 4 on the US Billboard 200 chart, among others. Now, it looks like The Cure will release another album in 2025, according to frontman Robert Smith.

In a recent interview on Radio X, Smith revealed that The Cure will likely (hopefully) release a follow-up album before summer 2025 hits. Smith said that he has been working hard to finish up the upcoming album and that the record will include a few songs that were cut from the final version of Songs Of A Lost World.

“In 2019 we recorded 24 songs for what was going to be a double album, and those eight have come out,” said Smith. “The companion piece to ‘Songs Of A Lost World’, which will be out hopefully before next summer, is what I’m currently finishing. I just need to mix it. It’s not as dark in some ways. Although, it actually has probably the saddest song of all of them on it. It has a couple of songs that we were playing live which didn’t make it onto ‘Songs Of A Lost World’ and it has some completely new stuff that no one’s ever heard. But it’s probably more varied, I think.”

Smith noted that there will likely only be about 10 songs on the currently-unnamed follow-up album.

What Can Fans Expect From The Cure’s 2025 Album?

Smith alluded that the song “It Can Never Be The Same”, which debuted back in 2016, will be included in the upcoming release. He also teased “A Boy I Never Knew” as another addition to the new album. That track was written years back for the 2004 album The Cure but never made it to the final cut.

“I think that would probably make it on [the new record],” Smith said in the above-mentioned interview. “That’s a sad song, but in a completely different way. That’s me singing about a boy that died a million years ago. About the death of humanity before it started, I think…”

Surprisingly enough, Smith also teased yet another album on top of the two new releases. Very little is known about that release, which Smith has casually teased in a number of interviews. The third album will be “completely different”, according to Smith.

“It’s really kind of random stuff, like late-night studio stuff,” said Smith in an Absolute Radio interview. “But some of it is really good actually, it’s just very very different.”
