Neil Young is one of the most celebrated songwriters of all time. His catalog is lauded enough–he doesn’t need to take on anyone else’s material. Nevertheless, Young has been known to deliver a cover from time to time. Young isn’t afraid to take creative risks, which is often necessary for a strong cover. Moreover, he’s an artist with something to say. Even if he’s using the words of someone else, he’s never shy of a powerful message. The three Young covers showcase these attributes, and are so stellar, they easily rival the original versions.

“On The Road Again” (Willie Nelson)
While Willie Nelson put “On the Road Again” on the map, Young’s version is interesting and distinctive enough to warrant a listen. Unlike Nelson’s cheery, upbeat rendition, Young’s take adds an air of darkness to this familiar track. Despite his insistence that he can’t wait to get on the road again, you can’t help but feel some resistance bubbling under the surface. Young allows the inevitable tiredness that comes along with life on the road to guide his vocals here. It’s not the happy-go-lucky song we’ve all come to know and love, but if you’re gonna cover a classic, you might as well put your stamp on it.
“Imagine” (John Lennon)
While Young’s cover of “On the Road Again” takes some artistic liberties, his rendition of John Lennon’s “Imagine” is faithful to the original. The folk icon took on this timeless ode to peace in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. Needless to say, America needed a unifying voice. Not to say Young was the voice for everyone, but it’s hard not to be moved when you hear Young sing this ballad with palpable emotion. It may never beat Lennon’s original, but this Young cover can’t be ignored.
“All Along the Watchtower” (Bob Dylan)
Young’s cover of “All Along the Watchtower” isn’t the most famous rendition of the song. It’s likely a strong third-place contender. Jimi Hendrix earned the most lauded version of this track. Not even Young could outdo that history-making cover. That being said, Young’s take on “All Along the Watchtower” is a well-performed, talent-bearing effort. It may not have piercing guitar solos, but the frenetic energy of rock n’ roll is not lost on this folkie—young more than delivers his fair share of that energy with this cover.
