3 of the Best Beatles Songs That George Harrison Sang Lead On

Most people see Lennon and McCarthy as the “lead singers” of much of The Beatles‘ work. However, we can’t forget about the contributions George Harrison made both vocally and lyrically. Here are some songs that were sung by Harrison, and written by him as well.

“Here Comes The Sun”

Harrison’s “Here Comes The Sun” appears on Abbey Road, and he actually wrote and sang vocals for it. The song came together at a time when The Beatles were bogged down with “banks, bankers, and lawyers.”

“We had meetings and meetings and with all this, you know,” Harrison shared in an interview. And it was really awful, ‘cuz it’s not the sort of thing we enjoy. And one day, I didn’t come into the office. I just sort of, it was like sagging off school.”

Harrison needed a break, and so he went to visit his songwriter friend, Eric Clapton. It was there in Clapton’s garden that “Here Comes The Sun” came to be.

“While My Guitar Gently Weeps”

Appearing on The White Album, “My Guitar Gently Weeps” was written using a Chinese book called I Ching. The original version of the song features only Harrison on guitar and McCartney on organ. That one can be found on The Beatles’ Anthology 3.

“‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’ was just a simple study based on the theory that everything has some purpose for being there at that given moment,” Harrison shared in A Hard Day’s Write, “I was thinking that anything I see when I open a book, I’m going to write a song about. So I opened this book and I saw ‘gently weeps.’ I shut the book and then I started the tune.”

“For You Blue”

Harrison wrote this song after spending time in Woodstock with Bob Dylan and other musicians. It would seem that through befriending other musicians (outside The Beatles) that Harrison became inspired to make some of his best work.

“For You Blue” is a love song inspired by his wife, Pattie Boyd. Boyd and Harrison were married from 1966 to 1977.

“I loved you from the moment I saw you,” Harrison sings. “You looked at me, that’s all you had to do / I feel it now, I hope you feel it too.
