3 One-Hit Wonders With Lyrics That Make Zero Sense

These three one-hit wonders feature lyrics that make zero sense, but weโ€™re not exactly mad about it. Despite being kind of difficult to understand (if there even is anything to understand), these three tracks were bops when they were first released. Letโ€™s dive in, shall we?

1. โ€œSurfinโ€™ Birdโ€ by The Trashmen

Who doesnโ€™t love a little โ€œSurfinโ€™ Birdโ€? The 1963 surf rock anthem from The Trashmen was a huge hit when it was first released. It climbed to no. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart that very year. The lyrics of this song are more or less nonsensical, though some speculate that the โ€œbirdโ€ in question is simply slang for โ€œgossipโ€.

Havenโ€™t you heard about the bird? As The Trashmen said quite eloquently, over and over again: โ€œBirdโ€™s the word.โ€

2. โ€œThe Ketchup Song (Aserejรฉ)โ€ by Las Ketchup

โ€œThe Ketchup Songโ€ is probably one of the most well-known examples of one-hit wonders that make zero sense in a language that isnโ€™t English. This song is tentatively titled โ€œThe Ketchup Song (Aserejรฉ)โ€ and was released by Spanish pop outfit Las Ketchup. So, obviously, the song is about a particular red condiment, right? Wrong!

The lyrics of this Spanish tune are completely nonsensical, and that nonsense makes it to the Spanglish version of the tune as well. Itโ€™s definitely a novelty song, but it did get a massive amount of success on the Europop charts and made it to no. 1 on countless international charts in 2002โ€ฆ though it only made it to no. 54 in the US.

3. โ€œBlue (Da Ba Dee)โ€ by Eiffel 65

This oneโ€™s a bit of a technicality on our list of one-hit wonders with lyrics that make zero sense. Italian Eurodance outfit Eiffel 65 has enjoyed quite a few hits throughout their career in their native Italy, as well as Europe as a whole. A few chart-topping follow-ups include โ€œToo Much Of Heavenโ€ and โ€œMove Your Bodyโ€. However, โ€œBlueโ€ was the outfitโ€™s only chart-topping Top 10 hit in the United States, so weโ€™ll include it here.

โ€œBlue (Da Ba Dee)โ€ features a few nonsensical lines, particularly gems like โ€œI’m blue / Da ba dee da ba diโ€. What does it mean? Who knows! Itโ€™s still a bop, and even got a reimagined cover that topped the charts recently.ย
