Just now getting into The B-52s? This new wave dance-rock outfit hit the airwaves back in the latter half of the 1970s and has been delivering oddball, danceable, and campy tunes ever since. Even younger generations are getting into their classic hits, and itโs a good thing to see. With that in mind, there are a few essential songs from The B-52s that all new fans should hear at least once.
1. โLove Shackโ
Here it is, their claim to fame. โLove Shackโ is probably The B-52sโ most well-known song of their career, outside of maybe โRock Lobsterโ. Released in 1989, this song peaked at no. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

I totally get why people back in the day loved it, and I also get why people still love it today. This jam has aged very well, and that pop-perfect hook just canโt be beat. Modern-day pop stars could never.
2. โRoamโ
Another stellar hit from 1989, โRoamโ comes from The B-52sโ album Cosmic Thing, which is one of the best reimaginings of the flower power movement and 20th century pop to come out of the 1980s. And โRoamโ was a bit of a wild card on that album, too. This song is more of an acid-rock tune with even more glittering joy oozing out of it than other songs on that incredible record.
3. โRock Lobsterโ
This song was The B-52sโ first big hit, and nobody has produced a song quite like it since 1978. Itโs one of their more definitive songs, and โRock Lobsterโ is still so much fun to listen to today.
From those out-of-tune guitars to that surf-rock vibe to those strange animal noises, โRock Lobsterโ was not like anything that had hit mainstream radio before. Itโs become a meme countless times through the years, too.
4. โPrivate Idahoโ
โPrivate Idahoโ from 1978 is a song all about escaping to a world that exists outside of our own boring, lame world. Everyone has huge hair, and physics donโt really exist in this magical place. Who wouldnโt want to escape to somewhere weird and cool?
This song has excellent harmonies and an excellent (as always) lead vocal track from Fred Schneider. โPrivate Idahoโ is one of the earliest B-52s songs to showcase how good the band was at penning pop hits.
