With much of the United States snowed in and even more of us expecting a blanket of cold white fluff by the end of the week, winter is in full swing. The first day of spring isn’t until March 20, so there are still plenty of frigid weather weeks on the calendar.
Country music has a song for every situation – including cold weather and colder hearts. Here are five frosty country hits to keep you company while huddling in your home.

Carrie Underwood – “Jesus, Take the Wheel”
The weather plays a crucial role in Carrie Underwood’s breakthrough hit. Written by Hillary Lindsey, Brett James, and Gordie Sampson, the heroine drives through a snowstorm and then slides in her car on ice. She threw her hands in the air and said, “Jesus, take the wheel.”
“Jesus, Take the Wheel” was the debut single from Underwood’s first post-American Idol album, Some Hearts. It was a six-week No. 1 song.
Mark Chesnutt – “Too Cold at Home”
Chesnutt sings about a different kind of cold in “Too Cold at Home.” In fact, Chesnutt’s breakthrough hit is about it being so hot he can’t even fish or play golf. However, his relationship with his partner has deteriorated to the point that he feels like he can’t go home.
Written by Bobby L Harden, “Too Cold at Home” peaked at No. 3, paving the way for Chesnutt’s first chart-topper “Brother Jukebox.”
Chris Young – “Under the Weather”
While this is technically a Christmas song from Young’s holiday album, It Must Be Christmas, it’s the first song I thought about when collecting country songs about dropping temperatures. Like Young’s breakthrough hit “Gettin’ You Home,” “Under the Weather” has a few lyrics about falling clothes – but it also talks about falling snow.”
Zac Brown Band – “Colder Weather”
Zac Brown wrote “Colder Weather,” a song about being emotionally unavailable, with Levi Lowrey, Coy Bowles, and Wyatt Beasley Durrette. In the song, the couple loves each other, and the woman says she’ll follow the man wherever he goes. The man says he’d like to see her again, but he’s struck in colder weather. In reality, he’s at a truck stop in Nebraska, noting that a waitress finds him attractive.
Garth Brooks – “Wolves”
Garth Brooks recorded “Wolves” as the closing track for his second album “No Fences.” Written by Stephanie Davis, “The Wolves” is a gut-wrenching song about people fighting against the elements and their circumstances to keep their farmland. “Wolves” may be the ultimate country song about fighting cold weather.
Lyrics include: Lord, please shine, a light of hope| On those of us who fall behind| And when we stumble in the snow| Could You help us up, while there’s still time?
“In Oklahoma, there were the two kinds of people: poor with land and poor without,” Brooks said. “But these guys that had it, they’re fighting like hell just to hang on to it. That story hit me like a ton of bricks.”
