5 of the Most Controversial and Wild Live Performances in Alternative Rock History

Who doesn’t love a good juicy live performance? These five controversial live performances from alternative rock’s past wouldn’t make most people cringe nowadays. But at the time, they were considered pretty shocking. Let’s dive in, shall we?

1. Kurt Cobain Pretended To Collapse at a Festival in 1992

Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain makes our list of the most controversial live alternative rock performances twice, and both instances are low-key pretty hilarious in retrospect. The time at which this performance happened, however, was far from a funny time for Nirvana. 

The band headlined the 1992 Reading Festival at a time when Cobain was going in and out of rehab. Cobain decided to take a lighthearted (for him) approach to the performance and was rolled out on stage in a wheelchair. He pretended to collapse from drug-induced exhaustion before diving into the song “Breed”. It was a killer performance, but some viewers weren’t a fan of the joke.

2. Iggy Pop Smothered Himself in Peanut Butter On Stage in 1970

Iggy Pop pulled quite a few wild stunts in his heyday, both as a solo artist and as part of The Stooges. This particular performance saw Iggy Pop smothering himself in peanut butter gifted by a fan, then slinging handfuls of the food at the audience. From allergy-havers to concert cleanup crews, a lot of people weren’t happy about the stunt.

3. The Vines Scared David Letterman in 2002

The Vines put on a killer performance during their 2002 set on The Late Show With David Letterman. Most alt-rock fans wouldn’t bat an eye at the performance, either. The Vines screeched, screamed, and demolished their set in typical 2000s rock fashion. 

However, casual viewers thought they were witnessing a mental breakdown. It’s one of the few instances where David Letterman did not get up from his seat to greet the band after their set, instead opting for the safety of his desk.

4. Billie Joe Armstrong Angrily Name-Dropped Justin Beiber on Stage in 2012

In retrospect, this performance was kind of funny at the time. However, Billie Joe Armstrong’s meltdown on stage at iHeartRadio Festival in 2012 was not really a joke. Armstrong was going through a bad time and battling an addiction to pills. Green Day only had a minute left of their set, which set Armstrong off.

“I’m not f***ing Justin Bieber, you motherf***ers!” he screamed before smashing his guitar and storming off. Armstrong went into addiction treatment shortly after.

5. Kurt Cobain Trolled the MTV Video Music Awards in 1992

Kurt Cobain closes out this list with Nirvana’s 1992 performance at the MTV Music Awards. Obviously, an internationally broadcasted live awards ceremony would be subject to quite a bit of censorship. MTV told Nirvana exactly what they were not going to perform: the controversial song “R*pe Me”. Cobain didn’t like being told what to do, especially when the network demanded that they perform “Smells Like Teen Spirit”. 

They came to a compromise with “Lithium”, but Cobain still wanted to give the execs a bit of a heart attack. When the camera panned to the band, Cobain began playing and singing the intro to “R*pe Me” on live TV. He switched to “Lithium” after a few measures, but the damage was already done. MTV had to quickly cut to an emergency break.
