Carrie Underwood will perform “America the Beautiful” at Trump’s inauguration later today (January 20). While some fans like the fact that Underwood will take part in an event that will likely mark a historic shift in American history, many aren’t. She has received several hateful comments about her decision to take the gig. Lee Greenwood, who will also perform during the event came to her defense over the weekend.

The “God Bless the USA” singer recently spoke to the New York Post about performing at today’s inaugural event. During the conversation, he weighed in on the hate Underwood is receiving for choosing to perform for the incoming president.
“I don’t think it affects Carrie,” Greenwood said about the hate. “Carrie and I are very good friends. She’s going to do a great job with ‘America the Beautiful.’ I pity those people who think they need to reach out to a star like her and run some negativity past her when all you have to do is ‘Thank you for performing for our next president,’” he added.
“Stop this negative crap. Let’s move on,” he said, addressing those speaking out against Underwood.
Carrie Underwood Spoke on Her Inauguration Performance
Last week, Carrie Underwood spoke to People about her choice to perform at the inauguration. “I love our country and am honored to have been asked to sing at the inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event,” she told the publication. “I am honored to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future,” she added. “I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future.”
Her recent statement is in line with comments she made about politics in a 2019 interview with The Guardian. “I try to stay far out of politics, if possible, at least in public because nobody wins,” she told the publication. “It’s crazy. Everybody tries to sum everything up and put a bow on it like it’s black and white and it’s not like that,” she added. “It does kind of bug me when people take a song or take something I said and try to pigeonhole me or force me to pick a side or something.”
