Pete Bernhard Breaks Down the Meaning Behind The Devil Makes Three’s New Single “Ghosts Are Weak” (Exclusive)

The Devil Makes Three announced their new album Spirits with the title track on Halloween. Then, they gave fans another taste of the forthcoming collection in December with the unintentionally dark “I Love Doing Drugs.” Today (January 22), they shared “Ghosts Are Weak” as the third and likely final single before Spirits drops on February 28.

The Devil Makes Three’s vocalist and principal songwriter Pete Bernhard spoke about the themes included in the new record in a statement last year. “The world’s in a strange place right now. A lot of the songs on this record come from that place—trying to make sense of it all, whether it’s dealing with loss, addiction, or the way people are more divided than ever,” he shared. “At the end of the day, this band has always been about celebrating resilience. We’ve always found a way to push through and wanted to reflect that in this album,” Bernhard added.

The Devil Makes Three Deal with Addiction on “Ghosts Are Weak”

The Devil Makes Three tackled several deep topics on Spirits. “Ghosts Are Weak” combines lyrics about loss and addiction with an endlessly catchy arrangement. Earlier this week, Pete Bernhard sat down with American Songwriter to discuss the new album. During the conversation, he talked about the inspiration for the new single.

“It’s a song about addiction but it’s also in the same vein as a lot of the other tunes because it’s mostly about people who I’ve lost to drug use,” Bernhard explained. The song, he said, was inspired by “people who have died because of drug use of people who just went completely off the rails to the point where I don’t have any contact with them anymore because of that.”

Bernhard went on to talk a little more about the song’s meaning. “Some people make it out of that and some people don’t. That’s what that song is about,” he explained. “It’s sort of a song about how you can run from whatever you’re running from but you can’t run forever.”
