1. “Ready, Set, Go” by Tokio Hotel
“Ready, Set, Go” by Tokio Hotel was released in 2007 on the German pop rock record Zimmer 483. It was a huge hit in Austria and Germany. Some fans outside of Europe got their first taste of the band with this record, too.
Growing up was something that 2000s kids either desperately wanted or wanted to avoid at all costs. In a way, it’s easy to understand the fear of growing up. This song from Tokio Hotel explores what it’s like to have to adapt to changes you weren’t expecting and to find the personal strength to make it through.
2. “My Wish” by Rascal Flatts
“My Wish” by Rascal Flatts makes our list of songs about growing up in the 2000s for a good reason. Something about this song is so comforting. It’s a well-written early 2000s track from Rascal Flatts, and the line “you never need to carry more than you can hold” was something a lot of kids needed to hear.
3. “Wake Up” by Arcade Fire
“Wake Up” by Arcade Fire was released by Canadian rockers Arcade Fire back in 2005 as part of their debut record Funeral.
Life is all about good times and hard lessons. Many of those hard lessons can be particularly rough, but accepting our own mistakes and accepting ourselves as we are is vital for growth. “If the children don’t grow up / Our bodies get bigger but our hearts get torn up” is a pretty heartwrenching line.
4. “Stop This Train” by John Mayer
This is a somewhat surprising entry on our list of songs about growing up in the 2000s. John Mayer penned a lot of cheesy love songs back in the day, but “Stop This Train” is more on the poignant side of his discography. If you felt like you were on a train traveling the wrong way as a kid, this track will resonate with you.
