Although a top name in country music, Dolly Parton was once nothing more than an aspiring artist with a dream. Growing up in a one-room cabin in Tennessee, the legendary singer had no idea what the future held for her or how she would have a theme park named after her. Known for hit songs like “Jolene” and “9 to 5”, Parton wasn’t alone during her climb to the top of country music as she married her late husband Carl Dean during the 1960s. Not one for the spotlight, he always supported and encouraged her. And with Dean passing away in March, Parton recently discussed what it has been like since losing her husband and friend.

Appearing on the Today Show, Parton seemed to struggle with her emotions when speaking about Dean. Staying together for 60 years, she insisted, “You know what, I get very emotional when people bring it up. But we were together 60 years. I’ve loved him since I was 18 years old. It’s a big adjustment just trying to change patterns and habits. I’ll do fine, and I’m very involved in my work and that’s been the best thing that could happen to me. But I’ll always miss him, of course, and always love him. He was a great partner to me.”
While still processing the loss, Parton continuously thanked her fans for their love and support over the last few months. “I’m so thankful. I got so many cards, letters, flowers from all over the world. I had no idea Carl Dean was so famous.”

Dolly Parton Celebrates Husband With New Song “If You Hadn’t Been There”
With Parton making a joke about Dean being famous, it was widely known that her husband was not a fan of the spotlight. Always decided to stay away from events, apparently, he even visited Dollywood in secret. “ He used to come to the park; he bought his own ticket – stood in line and got his ticket. He didn’t want somebody giving him a ticket ‘cause he was Dolly’s husband. Everybody thinks that’s the funniest thing.”
Able to remember the fun times they spent together, Dolly explained how she needed time. “I’m doing better than I thought I would. I’ve been with him 60 years. So, I’m going to have to relearn some of the things that we’ve done. But I’ll keep him always close. I need to laugh. I need some fun, so I’m probably gonna be stupid. I’ve been crying enough the last week or two… I’m at peace that he’s at peace…”
Showing just how much she loved Dean, Dolly honored his life and love with the new song “If You Hadn’t Been There”, which released just a few days after his death.
