The last few years felt like a blur for Parker McCollum, who prepared for his son’s first birthday. While expanding his career in country music, in 2022, he married his wife, Hallie Ray Light. Just two years later, they welcomed their first son. Thrilled about his growing career and family, McCollum opened up about being a father and how he would never write what he considered to be “Dad songs.”

Sitting down with Taste of Country Nights, McCollum promoted his new self-titled album that was expected to release on June 27th. Again, with the singer’s life changing over the years, some fans wondered if he would include a song about his son. Well, according to McCollum, “No. No dad songs.”
Not disliking songs about fathers and sons, McCollum offered more of an explanation, noting how there were already countless songs about the topic. “I would never sit down and try to write a dad song. It’s hard to do it without being cheesy, and if I were to write a song about my son, I’d want it to be really special.”
Parker McCollum Could Add His Name Alongside Luke Combs, Conway Twitty, and Waylon Jennings
While McCollum loved being a father to Major Yancey Tyler McCollum, he looked to keep it separate from his country music career. Known for hits like “Pretty Heart” and “Hell of a Year”, the idea of the singer writing a song about being a dad could add another classic to the fatherhood theme.
As McCollum mentioned, there have been numerous songs written about fathers and sons over the decades. Just looking at a few, Waylon Jennings released “Between Fathers and Sons”, which showcased the good and bad of the relationship. Another classic came from Conway Twitty in “That’s My Job.” Once again, the theme of the hit surrounded the job of a father and the sacrifices that come with the title.
And for Luke Combs, the birth of his boys flooded him with inspiration. He released “The Man He Sees In Me” and “Little Country Boys.” Channeling those emotions of fatherhood into lyrics, it might only be a matter of time before McCollum takes back his statement.
