“Best Song of the Night”: Liam Gallagher Trolls Green Day After Fan Is Booted From Show for Singing “Wonderwall”

During a recent show in Luxembourg, Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong invited a fan onstage to perform the pop-punk legends’ 1997 hit “Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)” on guitar. Instead, the man launched into a rendition of “Wonderwall” by Oasis. Armstrong was not amused, and security promptly ushered the fan offstage. However, Oasis lead singer Liam Gallagher appears to have appreciated the joke.

Sharing a video of the unexpected incident to his X/Twitter account on Tuesday (July 1,) the “Champagne Supernova” singer, 52, declared it, “Best song of the night.”

Social Media Reacts to Liam Gallagher’s Green Day Comment

Liam Gallagher has gained a reputation for fanning the social media flames, and this post was no exception. “what would you do if someone started playing basket case in an oasis gig,” wondered one X/Twitter user.

Much like Billie Joe Armstrong in the video, many Green Day fans did not take kindly to Gallagher’s assessment. “oh green day fans r gonna have a field day with u GOOD LUCK,” one wrote.

Per tradition, Green Day brought a fan onstage to perform “Good Riddance” on guitar during Monday’s (June 30) stop in Luxembourg. Instead, that fan began strumming the opening chords to Oasis’ 1995 track, “Wonderwall.”

Initially unaware of the joke, the “Jesus of Suburbia” singer, 53, joked, “You told me you could play this one!”

As the fan continues his rendition of “Wonderwall,” Armstrong exclaims, “Oh, f— me!” before taking back his guitar. Security then escorts the young man offstage.

Noel Gallagher Previously Accused Green Day of Ripping Off Oasis

This isn’t the first time that a member of Oasis has taken public shots at Green Day. In 2006, Liam Gallagher’s brother and bandmate, Noel, publicly accused the California trio of “ripping off” their song “Wonderwall” for the band’s 2004 hit “Boulevard of Broken Dreams.”

“If you listen, you’ll find it is exactly the same arrangement as ‘Wonderwall’,” Noel Gallagher said. “They should have the decency to wait until I am dead. I, at least, pay the people I steal from that courtesy.”

He added, “They consider themselves to be – and I quote – ‘a kick-ass rock ‘n’ roll band’. They could not be less kick-ass if they tried.”
