David Fair, Founding Member of Half Japanese, Passes Away at 74

When brothers Jad and David Fair moved to Maryland with their family, they decided to form a band. And in 1974, Half Japanese was created. Since then, the group has released over 20 albums and recorded singles like “How Will I Know.” Sadly, the last few years have included a great deal of heartbreak for Half Japanese. Back in 2025, member Mick Hobbs passed away. And now, the band mourned another devastating loss as David passed away at 74. 

The news of David’s passing was shared by his brother Jad, who told Rolling Stone that his brother had been battling cancer at the time of his death. David’s daughter, Harper, also took a moment to remember her father. Posting a message on Facebook, she wrote, “It is with a heavy heart that I announce that my father, David Fair, passed away on August 29^th, 2026. He lived a beautiful life of love, kindness, and creativity. Somewhere not on this Earth he has been reunited with the love of his life Pam.”

With David spending over five decades in the music business, he accumulated more than a few fans. And for Harper, she thanked those fans for their continued support. Knowing that they were also mourning his loss, she added, “Thank you all for honoring him, I know he’s smiling down at every picture and video he sees.”

David Fair Remembered For More Than His Music

The tributes didn’t stop there. Aside from fans using the comment section to highlight his career, talent, and love for music, David’s label, Thick Syrup Records, shared a collage of pictures on Instagram. 

Travis McElroy, the head of the label, wrote, “I was one of David’s biggest fans long before I was lucky enough to call him my friend. Half Japanese meant a lot to me, and David was one of those people who showed you that music didn’t have to follow any rules.”

Although McElroy watched David’s talent in real time, he wasn’t focused on the music he left behind. Instead, he continued, “He was a genuinely good, one-of-a-kind human being. I’m thankful our paths crossed and that I got to know him beyond the music. I have a lot of memories that mean even more to me now.”

McElroy admitted that he had no profound words to offer fans. But he promised, “I’m just really f******* sad, and I’m going to miss my friend.” 

David might have spent over five decades making music, but the tributes showed that his greatest impact came from simply being himself. And with fans, friends, and family remembering his kindness, his legacy appeared to extend far beyond Half Japanese.
