The 2025 CMT Awards have been canceled this year, and the annual ceremony’s future remains uncertain. According to recent reports, there’s a pretty good reason why the famed country music award ceremony has been given the boot.

The 2025 Country Music Television Awards, also known as the CMT Awards, was canceled this year by the program’s parent company, Paramount Global. You might recognize this media supercompany as the giant behind streaming platforms like Paramount+ and MTV. Paramount Global announced the cancelation of the CMT Awards via a memo sent to the ceremony’s staff.
Tons of country fans are wondering what happened, considering the ceremony’s popularity year after year. Apparently, it all comes down to business as usual.
Why Were the 2025 CMT Awards Canceled?
Paramount Global and Skydance Media went through a merger starting in 2024. Paramount executive Bruce Gillmer informed his staff that because of the merger, certain events would be “paused” in 2025.
“We want to share some news,” the statement reads. “We are pausing a few events for 2025, as we look to reimagine and optimize our events slate going forward. These include the MTV EMAs, MTV MIAWs, Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards in Mexico, and CMT Music Awards. Our world-class events remain a key component of Paramount’s music offering as we continue to raise the bar in delivering iconic, unforgettable performances and moments that drive pop culture.”
It’s sad news for country music fans. However, a few other big country music award ceremonies won’t be affected by the CMT Awards’ sudden cancelation.
Will Other Country Music Awards Get Canceled in 2025?
It’s worth noting that the 2025 Academy Of Country Music Awards (ACM Awards) has not been canceled. That particular country music award ceremony is produced by Amazon Prime Video and has been since 2022.
Just as well, the 2025 Country Music Awards (CMAs) have also not been canceled, as that ceremony is produced by the ABC network.
Last year, the CMT Awards were held on April 7 in Austin, Texas at the Moody Center and featured a wealth of performances. The future of the award ceremony remains unknown. However, Gillmer’s choice of words (“paused”) could mean that the CMT Awards could come back next year, or possibly at a later date. Stay tuned for updates!
