Jones, 24, titled her poem “David Bowie’s Daughter,” quipping, “That gets your attention ay?”

“I’m the daughter of a legend, but I’m more than just his name,” the poem read. “They see the blood, they hear the sound yet fail to see me, don’t feel the same.”

“They compare me to his heights, like I’m supposed to reach his light, but I’m not here to chase what’s already been done by loving what I do, I feel I’ve already won,” the poem continued. “Some like what I have made, others laugh at how I move. Yet they want me to carry on a legacy but that’s never been my truth.”

The poem continued with Jones insisting, “I’m not a copy, not a shadow.”

“I’m just a girl that’s as confused at you,” the poem read. “Never thought I was good at much, never thought it was worth it to pursue. I’m not trying to be that someone that all love and admire so. I’m creating my own rhythm, letting my true self show. But nobody knows how it may feel to be constantly despaired, then finally just saying “f**k it,” then being all around compared.”

The poem concluded, “But I’ll keep moving, keep doing me, even when the world is hard to please. I’m not trying to fill his shoes, I’m just trying to find my own peace.”

Lexi Jones’ Life and Work

Jones’ poem came the same month that she put out her debut album, Xandri. The 12-track LP is a mix of genres, combining elements of pop, electronic, and indie.

In addition to music, Jones works as an artist. In her mission statement on her website, Jones wrote that she uses art as a “coping mechanism” to “get out of dark places that felt impossible to see my way out of.”

Jones added that by painting, sketching, and illustrating, she’s able to convert my pent up negative energy into something positive.”

“My hope is to inspire those that come across this body of work, to join in the journey, to find something that fuels a passion to find your driving force in life,” she wrote. “It’s a necessity for everyone.”
