“I’ve Never Used the ‘R’ Word”: Ted Nugent Adamant About His Future, Says “I Still Crave to Play”

Gaining the titles of the Nuge, Uncle Ted, and Motor City Madman, Ted Nugent spent over six decades producing albums like Cat Scratch Fever and Free-for-All. Gaining praise and stardom throughout his time in the spotlight, Nugent also received a great deal of criticism for his beliefs on gun rights and politics. Although not afraid of some backlash, Nugent never apologized for his stance. And while the Nuge helmed the Adios Mofos farewell tour in 2023, it seemed the singer still had a few performances left.

Speaking with Eddie Trunk on Sirius XM, Nugent admitted he never announced his retirement during the 2023 tour. “I never used the word retire. A lot of people [say], ‘How come you’re gonna play again? You said you were gonna retire.’ I’ve never used the ‘R’ word. I made it quite clear that I still crave to play.”

While 76 years old, Nugent loved to perform for his fans but hated the stress that came with traveling all over the country. Finding the perfect balance, Nugent insisted, “I’m still absolutely stimulated by the pursuit of musical guitar adventure. So with Jason Hartless and Johnny Big and my buddy here John Kutz in Texas, we’re gonna do a bunch of ‘Rockouts’ in Texas in April and May, and then in Michigan and maybe beyond in August.”

Ted Nugent Admits “I’m An Old Man”

Although young at heart, Nugent knew he wasn’t in his 20s anymore. “I’m an old man. I’m 76. But I still crave grabbing that guitar and playing these grinds and grooves and flamethrowing fun music.”

Nugent even offered some insight for those artists who believe their best years are behind them. Noting how some of his friends continued to work into their 80s, he pointed to attitude. “It’s about attitude. If you still really, really love the music and you’re dedicated to putting on a show that earns the money of those ticket buyers, then of course it’s the American dream. I got old buddies that still weld. My favorite people are welders. My buddies that are good welders, they still weld, and one of ’em is 86 years old.”

With age just a number to Nugent, the singer prepared for another string of shows that will keep him busy throughout 2025.
