Support from the music industry and beyond began pouring in after the 14-time Grammy Award winner broke the news on social media early Friday. Swift’s frequent collaborator, Jack Antonoff, reshared her post to his Instagram Story, adding two exclamation marks.
The pop star’s boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, also subtly showed his support by clicking the “Like” button on her Instagram post. His teammate, three-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback Patrick Mahomes, retweeted a post captioned, “Taylor Swift now owns her masters,” alongside a screenshot of the letter on Swift’s website.
Taylor Swift Began Re-Recording Her First Six Albums in 2021
Taylor Swift’s massive purchase comes six years after music executive Scooter Braun bought the master recordings to her first six albums from her former label, Big Machine. Braun previously managed rapper Kanye West, whose feud with the pop star dates back to 2009.
In a letter posted to Tumblr, Swift wrote that Braun had “stripped me of my life’s work.”
“Essentially, my musical legacy is about to lie in the hands of someone who tried to dismantle it,” she said.
To regain control of her music—and likely also to devalue Braun’s investment—Swift began re-recording and releasing the affected albums in 2021. As of today, only two re-recordings remain: her eponymous 2006 debut, and 2017’s Reputation.
Meanwhile, Braun sold his stake in her back catalog to Shamrock Holdings, a Los Angeles investment fund, in November 2020. This transaction paved the way for Swift to buy it back six years later.
In a letter posted to her website, the “Karma” singer thanked Swifties for supporting the re-releases as well as the Eras Tour, which seemingly supplied the funds for the roughly $360 million price tag.
“All I’ve ever wanted was the opportunity to work hard enough to be able to one day purchase my music outright with no strings attached, no partnership, with full autonomy,” she wrote.
