Listen: Fiona Apple Delivers an Arresting Cover of Neil Young’s “Heart of Gold” for Tribute Album

Fiona Apple really is the kind of singer/songwriter who can cover anyone and make the song sound uniquely her own. Few people have that kind of balance of talent and passion. Recently, Apple covered Neil Young’s famous 1972 folk rock tune, “Heart Of Gold”. You might know that particular song as Young’s only no. 1 single in the US.

Apple’s cover is just one of many on the recent release Heart Of Gold: The Songs Of Neil Young Volume I, which features quite the laundry list of musicians. The tribute album’s namesake comes from the song Apple covered, and she did quite an incredible job with the song.

Fiona Apple’s cover of “Heart Of Gold” by Neil Young is quite faithful to the original. She didn’t opt to change the composition significantly. Here’s where Young and Apple overlap a bit. Both musicians are masters at using their music as a form of self-reflection. Apple matches that energy with her yearning, powerful cover of the Neil Young classic. It’s been lovely to hear her voice evolve for the better as she’s aged. That warm, yearning way she sings is best suited for a voice with a bit more of an alto range.

Heart Of Gold: The Songs Of Neil Young Volume I features quite a few famous names. Brandi Carlile opens up the record with a stunning cover of “Philadelphia”. Other musicians who paid homage to Neil Young on this album include Mumford & Sons, Courtney Barnett, Steve Earle, and others.

Proceeds from Heart Of Gold: The Songs Of Neil Young Volume I will benefit The Bridge School, a nonprofit organization that provides education programs to children with speech and physical impairments.

This gorgeous Neil Young tribute album was released yesterday, and the announcement of a follow-up tribute album (likely titled Volume 2) will be released soon, according to Young’s website. A vinyl version of the album is available for pre-order as well.
