Shavo Odadjian Opens up About System of a Down’s Status and Hesitation To Commit To Touring

System Of A Down is in a bit of a weird position in terms of touring at the moment. Bassist Shavo Odadjian recently sat down for an interview on SirusXM’s Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk to talk a bit about the famed alt-metal band’s current status.

It was recently announced that the band was set to perform 13 different live shows in 2025. For the uninformed, this is the most they’ve performed in one year since 2017, nearly a decade ago. The upcoming schedule has fans buzzing, and many are wondering if System Of A Down will launch another, bigger tour down the line.

Unfortunately, (or fortunately?), the band has given a pretty firm “maybe” on that one.

“We haven’t played a lot together for a while,” said Odadjian. “We’ve been doing one or two shows a year since 2017. So, the relationships were not as great as they are now. It’s just everybody wasn’t on the same page. We’ve been talking. Everything’s great, knock on wood. Everyone’s happy. So we decided to test the waters and play some shows. And that’s what it is. There is no strategy to it, there’s no plan to do the rest of the world just yet.”

Is System Of A Down Done Touring For Good?

“I’m not saying it’s not gonna happen,” Odadjian continued. “I’m not saying it is gonna happen.”

Odadjian went on to say that the band members told each other to “play it by ear” and see how they feel after those shows in 2025 are finished. He noted that if the members don’t feel like doing anymore, they simply won’t. But if they do, they will.

That’s a pretty big non-answer. And unfortunately for fans, we don’t have any more substantial answers. But we do know where the members of System Of A Down are coming from.

Odadjian explained that some of the band members (who he did not name) had bad experiences touring and “kind of hold that as PTSD”. But their live show experiences haven’t been all bad, either.

“Serj [Tankian] had a great time at Sick New World [Fest] last year,” Odadjian said. “We had such an amazing, fun show and everyone left the stage hugging. And so he called back, he’s like, ‘Dude, I loved it. Let’s do more of these.’”

There’s certainly hope!

You can try and grab tickets for System Of A Down’s upcoming 2025 tour dates, though they are selling out quite fast.
