The theme of the night was the Judges’ Song Contest. Carrie Underwood, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan each picked a song for every single contestant to sing. The contestant then picked their choice out of the three options, without knowing which judge suggested the tune.
Artis was given three good options: “Northern Attitude,” “Let It Be,” and “Faithfully.” He decided to follow up his previous night’s performance of Adele’s “When We Were Young” by choosing the latter song, a Journey classic.
It turns out that Underwood chose the song for Artis.
“You have the ability to take it, and mold it, and make it fit you,” Underwood said. “… I had chills throughout that performance.”
Bryan and Richie agreed, with the former calling Artis “brilliant” and the latter saying the performance was “amazing.”
Thunderstorm Artis Opens Up About His American Idol Journey
Five years before Artis wowed audiences on American Idol, he competed on The Voice. In a recent interview with Parade, Artis revealed how his previous competition experience has helped him during his second venture.
“It’s no shade on The Voice,” he said. “It was an amazing experience. It really helped shape me in my younger years. Now five years later, I just feel like I’m a different man and a different artist, and I’m looking forward to saying, ‘Hey, America, do you remember me?’ and just showing them who I am.”
When it comes to why now was the right time to return to TV, Artis said that he’s “in a different season of life” than he was the first time around.
“I wanted to come on here and really showcase my artistry in a way that I didn’t get to do on the last show with some original music,” he said. “I really wanted to see if I had what it took. Life is all about taking chances and so I wanted to take a chance on myself with this show.”
As for his strategy for the competition, Artis noted, ““It’s really up to me to really drive it home.”
“I was raised to give it your best whether there’s one person listening or millions,” he said. “It doesn’t matter, if someone special needs to hear what you have to offer, then you’ve got to get up there and give your best.”
