“We’re Married He Just Doesn’t Know It Yet”: Zach Top’s Cover of a George Jones Classic Has Fans Ready To Put a Ring on It

While only breaking into country music a few years ago, Zach Top wasted no time making his presence known. Releasing his debut solo album, Cold Beer & Country Music, back in April 2024, fans rushed to see Top in concert due to his love for 90s country and his ability to put on one entertaining show. With several videos hitting social media over the last few months, Top proved himself to be a top performer in country music. Honoring those who came before him while leaving his own mark in the genre, Top decided to celebrate George Jones with a cover of the hit song “Love Bug.”

Written by Wayne Kemp and Curtis Wayne, “Love Bug” eventually landed in the lap of Jones, who placed it on his album of the same name in the 1960s. Focusing on the power of new love and how it can take over the world, the song ended up No. 6 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs. And over the decades, Jones turned the hit into a duet, recording it with Vince Gill in 1994. Holding a spot in country music for decades, Top was all smiles as he started the song.

With the audience loving every minute, fans online commented, “This guy has got the younger and older generations lining up to see his shows.” One person added, “He’s got the whole world shook up.” Another fan was seemingly ready to put a ring on it, writing, “We’re married he just doesn’t know it yet.”

Zach Top Recalls Writing “Dirt Turns To Gold” For Debut Album

As for his debut album, Top discussed one of his favorite songs he wrote with Paul Overstreet called “Dirt Turns To Gold.” Hoping to create a few classic country songs himself, the singer said, “One of the songs that means the most to me is ‘Dirt Turns To Gold.’ I wrote that with Paul Overstreet and Carson, and I believe it was the first time I wrote with Paul. It’s incredible to me, the writing talent that guy has, and he’s a singer and a player. And he’s a funny guy to write with. I love him.”

Revealing what it was like to write with Overstreet, Top laughed, “He’s so fun in the room, but he comes at the start of it, and it seems there’s 25 ideas running around in his head, and he’ll start rapid-firing them at you and playing something on the guitar.”

Finding his own way while honoring the rich history of country music, Top is quickly becoming the perfect blind between old and new.
