While Willie Nelson helped inspire an entire generation of country music singers, the icon also inspired his own children. With such a love for music, it seemed only a matter of time before his children followed in his footsteps. And for Lukas Nelson, there seemed no better place to be than on stage. Part of Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real, the band released several studio albums with their last, Sticks and Stones, hitting shelves in July 2023. But outside of the studio, Lukas engaged his fanbase by offering several covers of hit songs. And one of them happened to be “I’m Still in Love with You.”

Back in October 1972, Al Green released the album I’m Still in Love with You. Besides the hit song mentioned above, the album came full of classics like “Love and Happiness” and “Look What You Done for Me.” The album was such a hit that Rolling Stone placed it on their list of 500 Greatest albums of all time. So, it seemed fitting that Lukas would cover a song that had such an impact and remained a classic.
Posting the video on his Instagram, Lukas didn’t care much for the captions, only writing, “On an Al Green kick lately.” Letting his music do the talking, the singer was in what appeared to be his study with nothing more than a guitar. Still, showing the full range of his talents, Lukas didn’t need much help at all.

Looking at what fans had to say about the cover, comments included, “Wow!! I seriously got goosebumps everywhere when you sang the high notes. Your voice is sooo amazing. I Love when you sing this song. The Best ever.” Another fan added, “I’ve said it before here. I’ll say it again. You can sing the phone book Lukas and it will have soul and authenticity. What a gift!”
While following Willie into the music business, Lukas once discussed how his mother, Annie D’Angelo, made sure to keep her children away from the stardom. “It can be a scary thing. People get crazy. And people want to be around it, and you never know the motives of people. It’s a very difficult thing to navigate that world. Growing up away from what would be the epicenter of that, in Texas, I think, was a pretty smart, wise decision by my mom.”
Although D’Angelo wasn’t Willie’s first wife, Lukas praised her for keeping the icon healthy. “The greatest thing about my mom is she takes great care of my father. Not the greatest thing—there’s many good things—but that is one of my favorite parts of her. How well she takes care of him and how she’s kept him healthy and alive and still doing what he loves for so long. I think he appreciates and respects that.”
