Paul Mescal will play Paul McCartney, Barry Keoghan will portray Ringo Starr, Harris Dickinson will take on the role of John Lennon, and Joseph Quinn will portray George Harrison. The project is titled The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic Event, according to the post on TheBeatles.com. All of the movies will get their theatrical premiere in April 2028.
Mendes and the four actors were on hand for the announcement at CinemaCon 2025.
According to Deadline, Mendes told the CinemaCon audience the four movies’ simultaneous premiere was the first “bingeable moment in cinema,” using the words of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group CEO Tim Rothman.
The Oscar-winning director wouldn’t confirm the order the films will be released. Regarding The Beatles, he said that the group “redefined the culture and stayed with you for a lifetime,” adding that the Fab Four was perhaps “the most significant band of all time.”
After the actors were introduced, they each quoted part of a lyric from “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”: “It’s wonderful to be here, it’s certainly a thrill, you’re such a lovely audience, we’d like to take you home with us.”
More Details About The Beatles’ Biopics
Mendes admitted at the CinemaCon event that he’d been “trying to do a [Beatles] film for years,” but gave up because “story was too big for one film.” He also noted that a TV series didn’t seem like the best way to approach the band’s story. Mendes said he eventually came up with “a way to tell the epic story for a new generation.”
The Beatles biopics project was first announced in February 2024. As explained in the original announcement, each movie will focus on a different band member’s point-of-view. It was initially reported that the movies would premiere in 2027.
The films are being made with the cooperation of The Beatles and the band’s Apple Corps Ltd. Company. The project will mark the first time that full rights have been granted to use the Fab Four’s music and life stories in a scripted movie. Representing the band are Starr, McCartney, and the families of the late Lennon and Harrison.
Mendes won an Academy Award in 2000 for directing American Beauty. He also was nominated for best director in 2020 for the film 1917. Other movies Mendes has directed include Road to Perdition, Empire of Light, and the James Bond films Skyfall and Spectre.
