Today, Evan Honer is one of the most popular independent artists in the country and Americana sphere. In just two short years, his honest and vulnerable songwriting has brought him millions of monthly listeners, collaborations with rising stars, and much more. To say that Honer is on his way to big things would be an understatement. However, that may not be true without the self-deprecating humor of “IDK Sh*t About Cars.”

In the song, Honer battles with what it means to be a man in the modern age, admitting that he falls short of the stereotypes of masculinity. Fortunately, the song resonated with a wide array of fans and helped put the young singer/songwriter on the map. Recently, Honer sat down with American Songwriter to discuss the song’s origins and its impact on his career.

While discussing Evan Honer’s new music, we circled back to the song that gave him a major viral moment when he released it last year.

“I still feel good about that song,” Honer said about the single. “I think I’m happy it pushed me further,” he added. Then, he revealed that he almost didn’t release it.

“I was just really in a rut of writing a bunch of sad songs. The lyrics are still kind of sad but I wanted to write something new and fun and I came up with that,” he recalled. “I thought it was kind of stupid at first. But then I just decided to post it and I’m super happy I decided to put that out there. Now, at shows the funnest thing for me is playing that song,” he added. “Every member of the band has a solo and I normally play it last. So, I love playing it still.”

About the song’s broad appeal, Honer said, “Parents tell me it’s their kids’ favorite songs. They say ‘You can only say the cuss word if you’re at the show.’ It’s hilarious. I’ve gotten that so many times.” He added, “Also, mechanics are like, ‘I play that at my shop all the time.’ It’s like that’s not what I expected but it’s awesome.”

Honer also admitted that he’s still not what one would call a “car guy” despite a little help from his friends and fans. “Every show someone has to say something. Wyatt Flores, one of my really good friends, sent me an auto mechanic book for dummies for my birthday. That was great,” he said, laughing.
