Rami Malek – Freddie Mercury

Rami Malek took on the role of Freddie Mercury in 2018. Mercury was a larger-than-life musician, who isn’t easy to emulate. Malek’s performance in this rock star film could’ve very easily tipped over into “silly” territory. It’s hard to be this over-the-top without imbuing an air of humor. Nevertheless, Malek managed to keep things grounded. This performance is one of the most memorable music biopic portrayals of the last decade.

Mama, just killed a man
Put a gun against his head, pulled my trigger, now he’s dead
Mama, life had just begun
But now I’ve gone and thrown it all away
Mama, ooh, didn’t mean to make you cry
If I’m not back again this time tomorrow
Carry on, carry on as if nothing really matters

Val Kilmer – Jim Morrison

Jim Morrison is one of the most influential figures in rock history. His rebellious approach to the craft influenced an entire generation of musicians and music fans alike. Needless to say, taking on this role would be a big ask for any actor. Val Kilmer more than pulled off his Morrison portrayal in the rock star film, The Doors. The film is edgy, moving, and poetic–everything Morrison signified.

Riders on the storm
Riders on the storm
Into this house, we’re born
Into this world, we’re thrown
Like a dog without a bone
An actor out on loan
Riders on the storm

Angela Bassett – Tina Turner

Angela Bassett is one of the greatest actresses of her generation. As such, she made quick work of her Tina Turner portrayal in What’s Love Got to Do With It. This role requires much more than performance skills. Turner’s story is rife with heartbreak, abuse, and pain. Bassett juggles it all beautifully in this rock star film.

What’s love got to do, got to do with it?
What’s love but a second-hand emotion?
What’s love got to do, got to do with it?
Who needs a heart when a heart can be broken?

Kurt Russell – Elvis Presley

Several actors have played Elvis Presley. Moreover, he’s one of the most imitated rock stars of all time. That made Kurt Russell’s job in Elvis a tall order. How do you take this oft-imitated musician and make the role your own? We’re not sure of the specifics, but we know Russell found the answer. Revisit his performance, below.

Well, you can knock me down, step in my face
Slander my name all over the place
Do anything that you want to do
But uh-uh honey, lay off of my shoes
