In his version of the track, Nelson slowed it down. His deep vocals and the twang in his voice gave the track a whole new feel.
“When I first heard this song, what struck me was the intro synth reminded me a lot of a Beach House song called ‘Space Song,’” Nelson wrote alongside the clip. “I kept listening and found it to be a brilliant progression and melody.. really awesome to see that in a pop song.”
“Respect,” he added. “A good song is a good song!”
“Please Please Please” was a huge hit for Carpenter. It earned Carpenter her first No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, as well as a GRAMMY nomination for Song of the Year.
Lukas Nelson’s Debut Solo Album
Nelson’s latest cover came as he’s gearing up for the June 20 release of his debut solo album, American Romance. He previously served as the frontman for Promise of the Real for 15 years.
“This album is the first chapter in a whole new era of my life as an artist,” he previously wrote on Instagram of the LP. “It’s a love story to the country that raised me. Diners and highways that carried me through the joy and pain that led to the music you hear now.”
On his website, Nelson delved more into the project, stating, “The heartache that America has brought me and the joy that it has brought me. It’s all led to where I am right now.”
So far, he’s released two songs—”Ain’t Done” and “Pretty Much”—from the album.
In the lead up to his album’s release, Nelson is on the road. He’s set to play concerts across the U.S. through August.
