“i think i might be in love”
By Nate Benson aka bnsn
Interview by American Songwriter
Nate Benson (bnsn) is the American Songwriter Heart Toppers Song Contest Promotion winner for his song “i think i might be in love.” American Songwriter caught up with Nate to get the story behind his love song.
How long have you been songwriting?
I actually started diving into music during the pandemic in 2020. I had a lot of time on my hands and I loved the pursuit of learning how to produce and write my own lyrics. I’ve always appreciated amazing songwriting and eventually I asked myself, “why not me?”
Why did you enter American Songwriter’s Heart Toppers Promotion?
Some of my favorite musical artists, Quinn XCII and Lauv, are judges with American Songwriter. Given that I draw a lot of inspiration from them and the style of music they make, I jumped at the opportunity!
What was the inspiration behind your song, “i think i might be in love”?
This is actually a funny story – I wrote it for a friend’s wedding. My friend Turner approached me with a month until her big day wondering if I would make a song that encapsulated her relationship with her then fiance. Of course I said yes! The song’s endearing lyrics come from my observations of their relationship as well as the love I’d experienced with my ex at the time.
Who are your all-time favorite songwriters and why?
Jon Bellion, Jeremy Zucker, and Quinn XCII. Jon Bellion’s ability to take pop melodies and lay them on top of the dopest, most creative song production constantly inspires me. Jeremy Zucker beautifully crafts his music with background textures and his lyrics always find a way to depict those hard-to-describe feelings. Quinn XCII is an absolute pro at making bangers you jam out to in your car. I love them all so much.
Are you planning to release any new music this year?
I am! I’m sitting on a few unreleased songs at the moment. My next song ‘caffeine’ is coming soon and I’m absolutely stoked for everyone to hear it 🙂
What would you tell other artists who are considering entering the contest?
Shoot your shot! If you’re passionate about making music then don’t deprive the world of your talents. American Songwriter provides awesome opportunities for your music to get heard.
