Billy Joel announced to the world just a few days ago that he has been diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus. NPH is a disease that causes excess fluid buildup around the brain. The condition can affect numerous brain functions, from concentrating to memory to bodily movement. The illness typically occurs in people over the age of 65.

Following the diagnosis, Joel announced on Friday that he would be cancelling all of his upcoming tour dates.
“Billy Joel has announced that he will be cancelling all scheduled concerts following a recent diagnosis of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH),” an announcement posted to Joel’s Instagram account reads. “This condition has been exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to problems with hearing, vision, and balance.”
The announcement noted that under his “doctor’s instruction,” Billy Joel must undergo physical therapy and avoid performing during the recovery process.
After making the shocking announcement, there wasn’t a single critical comment to be found about the cancelled tour dates. Fans simply poured out love in Joel’s direction.
“We love you so much Billy,” said one fan. “Get well soon Piano Man!”
“Most importantly, I hope you are able to live fully and continue to be a wonderful part of your daughters’ lives,” said another.
Thankfully, NPH can be reversed. And according to Joel’s daughter, Alexa Ray Joel, the Piano Man is “entirely committed” to recovering from the condition.

Alexa Ray, daughter of Billy Joel and model Christie Brinkley, took to her social media pages to offer words of gratitude and hope to her father’s fans.
“I just wanted to thank you all for the beautiful outpouring of love and support amid the recent news of My Father’s health diagnosis,” said Alexa Ray in an Instagram post, accompanied by a piece of artwork. “My Dad is the strongest and most resilient man I’ve ever known… and he’s entirely committed to making a full recovery with ongoing physical-therapy treatments as he continues to regain his strength.”
Alexa Ray went on to thank her father’s fans for their “genuine care, empathy, and concern.” She noted that it “means so much to [Billy Joel].”
