Weir’s Facebook page shared news of the event, which organizers have dubbed “Homecoming: Celebrating the Life of Bobby Weir.”

On Jan. 17 at 12:45 p.m. PT, fans should gather at Civic Center Plaza. What will follow is a tribute to the late guitarist, “whose music, spirit, and humanity shaped generations.”

“Together, we will pay tribute in the community and collective heartbeat that he created,” the post read. “A short sacred stop on his homecoming journey, the gathering will center on gratitude, remembrance, and togetherness, along with special tributes to honor Bobby.”

While the event will not include musical performances, it will feature a three-block-long procession, which will serve as “a hat tip” to Weir “on his way out.”

Bob Weir Dead at 78

The event is being held on the same month that Weir died. The guitarist had been fighting cancer in recent years, but ultimately succumbed to underlying lung issues. He was 78.

Weir’s family announced his death in a post to his website, which revealed that the musician “transitioned peacefully, surrounded by loved ones.”

“There is no final curtain here, not really. Only the sense of someone setting off again. He often spoke of a three-hundred-year legacy, determined to ensure the songbook would endure long after him. May that dream live on through future generations of Dead Heads,” the post read. “And so we send him off the way he sent so many of us on our way: with a farewell that isn’t an ending, but a blessing. A reward for a life worth livin’.”

The tribute concluded, “May we honor him not only in sorrow, but in how bravely we continue with open hearts, steady steps, and the music leading us home. Hang it up and see what tomorrow brings.”

Weir is survived by his wife, Natascha, and their daughters, Monet and Chloe.
